Overview
In partnership with YMD Boon and Wigston Academy Trust, R1 Construction successfully delivered a state-of-the-art science teaching facility at Wigston Academy in Leicestershire. The project involved the design and construction of a modern science block to enhance the academy's educational capabilities and provide students with a cutting-edge learning environment.
R1 Construction, in partnership with YMD Boon and Wigston Academy Trust, is proud to announce the successful completion and handover of a transformative project at Wigston Academy in Leicester. This 30-week project replaced a dilapidated two-storey science block with a state-of-the-art teaching facility, providing students with modern, energy-efficient spaces to support their learning.
The new science block features two advanced science labs, two modern classrooms, and additional support spaces designed to foster an interactive and collaborative learning environment. The building’s design balances contemporary elements with the classic 1950s brickwork of Block A, ensuring a seamless integration with the academy’s existing architecture.
Words from the client
We are thrilled to continue our partnership with R1 Construction, delivering high-quality learning environments that meet the evolving needs of the education sector. This project has demonstrated how modern construction methods can enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and provide long-term value for schools. We look forward to continuing this journey with the upcoming work at Moreton & Morrell Primary School."
To improve energy efficiency, the building incorporates Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS) and photovoltaic cells on the curved wave-form roof. The well-lit entrance foyer, complete with solar-reflective glazing and roof lights, provides a welcoming first impression. The use of cedar cladding, rendered panels, and powder-coated double glazed aluminium windows complements recent additions to the campus, further enhancing the building’s aesthetics and sustainability.
The adoption of the innovative SIPS technology allowed for enhanced energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability, ensuring the new science block supports the academy’s long-term goals while minimising its environmental impact. The project was completed within the 30-week timeline, providing Wigston Academy with a cutting-edge educational facility that reflects modern teaching needs and the institution's heritage.
Ben Tomkinson, Managing Director of R1 Construction, commented: "This project exemplifies the impact of collaboration, innovation, and thoughtful design. From the outset, our goal was to create a space that inspires students and teachers alike, while respecting the academy’s architectural heritage and surrounding community. By adopting the Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS), we’ve not only ensured a highly energy-efficient and cost-effective solution but also significantly reduced construction time. Working closely with YMD Boon and Wigston Academy Trust, we’ve transformed a vision into reality. It’s incredibly rewarding to see this building take its place as both a practical and aspirational environment for young minds to thrive."
