Overview

R1 Construction delivered a new-build extension for Springcare at River Meadows Care Home in Shawbury, Shropshire. Built on previously unused land, the facility includes 14 bedrooms, accessible bathrooms, communal living areas, and a spacious dining space, enhancing comfort and care for residents.

R1 Construction was appointed by Springcare to deliver a high-quality new-build extension at River Meadows Care Home in Edgbaston, Shawbury, Shropshire. Constructed on previously unused land adjacent to the existing building, the project was designed to support the care home’s ongoing expansion and improve facilities for residents. The extension provides 14 comfortable bedrooms, fully accessible shower and bathroom facilities, and inviting communal spaces, including a modern kitchen and living area on the first floor, as well as a spacious dining and lounge area on the ground floor. Thoughtfully designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind, this development enhances accessibility, comfort, and the overall care experience for residents and staff alike.

Words from the client

"The job has been built on schedule and proceeded without problems. Building Control have had little to amend, and the job has been safe and properly sequenced. Much of the credit must be given to your foreman, Jordan Bannister. In over 50 years of practice, I’ve never met a better foreman—the site was well organised and clean, the workforce properly accommodated, and visitors made welcome. I hope we may work together again."

Work commenced in September 2023, starting with groundworks to prepare the site. Concrete strip footings, internal drainage, and a reinforced concrete slab were completed by late October, allowing brickwork to begin promptly. The superstructure was built using traditional brick and block cavity walls, with a turreted bay section and a striking wrap-around window in the living room. By the end of 2023, all brickwork was completed, setting the stage for roof construction in early 2024.

The roof was assembled using attic trusses, hand-cut hip rafters, and vaulted trusses to form high ceilings, including the impressive spiral turret feature. Once tiled and weatherproofed, internal works began in February 2024. Timber stud walls were installed on the first floor, with blockwork forming the ground floor. First-fix electrics and plumbing were completed, followed by plastering, decoration, and final finishes. High-quality ash veneer doors and balustrading complemented the modern design, and essential safety features, including emergency lighting and disabled-access bathroom fittings, were installed.

The project was completed on schedule in May 2024, delivering a well-designed and thoughtfully executed extension. The seamless coordination of trades ensured a smooth and efficient build process, meeting all safety and quality standards.
