Tom Jones, a student at Shrewsbury College, is currently undertaking a two-year T-level course in Design, Surveying, and Planning for Construction, which includes a placement at R1.
With a background in carpentry and a keen interest in the complexities of construction projects, Tom joined the programme to develop his skills, challenge himself, and gain valuable experience. We spoke with Tom to learn about his journey so far, the skills he's developing, the significance of his R1 placement, and his aspirations for a future career in the construction industry.
What initially sparked your interest in construction, and how did this lead you to choose a T-level at Shrewsbury College?
I believe my interest in construction began during my Design and Technology classes in secondary school, although I may not have fully realised it at the time. I particularly enjoyed the woodwork projects, where I developed a real passion for design.
After leaving school, my enthusiasm for woodwork naturally guided me towards a carpentry apprenticeship. While I found the apprenticeship rewarding and gained valuable experience, I soon realised that I wanted a deeper understanding of the planning, design, and background work involved in construction projects. This insight motivated me to enrol in the T-level programme at Shrewsbury College, where I could expand my knowledge and skills in these areas, ultimately providing me with a more well-rounded experience as I advance in my career.
Can you explain your experience at R1 and what has been your favourite part of your placement so far?
During my work placement, I have rotated through various departments, gaining insight into their day-to-day operations. As I’ve moved around the office, the team have gradually involved me in real projects, teaching me a great deal so far. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead. I’ve also visited several ongoing sites, observing how designs progress to the construction phase and learning about the different roles involved on-site.
My favourite aspect of the placement has been experiencing the diverse elements of a construction project, from designing buildings to estimating costs and materials. I’m thoroughly enjoying exploring and learning, and while I haven’t yet decided my exact career path, the opportunity to rotate through different departments has provided me with invaluable insights into various roles which is exactly what I was hoping to get out of the T-level course when I signed up. This hands-on experience will play a key role as I progress into the second year and start to make decisions about my future career.
What are some of your greatest strengths and opportunities for further growth, and how have you addressed the biggest obstacles you’ve faced since starting the course?
One of my key strengths is my ability to work effectively within a team, a skill I’ve developed over time through playing rugby and collaborating with large groups. My experience at R1 has further boosted my confidence; rotating through different departments and working with a variety of colleagues has significantly enhanced this strength. As I continue with my course, I believe that this increased confidence will further develop enabling me to be more proactive in sharing my ideas. I am committed to engaging more with new people and adapting to different working environments, which will further develop my teamwork skills and overall growth.
The biggest challenge I've encountered so far has been the exams at the end of my first year. I've never considered myself particularly academic and have always disliked exams. However, I overcame this hurdle with the support of my course tutors, who continuously encouraged me to revise throughout the exam period.
A challenge I've faced during my placement at R1 has been communicating effectively with contractors and clients through email, as I sometimes struggle to articulate my thoughts clearly. Fortunately, whenever I've needed support, there has always been someone to guide me in structuring my emails and ensuring they sound professional.
Who has had the most impact on your T-level experience?
My tutor, Richard, has had a significant impact on my college experience. He was a tremendous help during the exam period, helping me to develop my revision techniques. Thanks to him, I passed my first set of exams, despite never feeling particularly confident in academic settings.
Everyone at R1 has been incredibly welcoming since I arrived, offering valuable support with any questions I’ve had while working with them. They’ve patiently guided me through their processes, integrated me into their work, and got me involved in some hands-on tasks – It’s been great!
What valuable skills have you developed during your placement at R1, how has it enhanced your understanding of construction, and how do you think this integration of practical experience with your coursework is preparing you for your future career?
The most valuable skill I've developed during placement is having confidence in myself, particularly when meeting new people. At the start of the course, I wasn’t very confident, but my placement at R1 has helped me come out of my shell and feel much more comfortable interacting with new people. I’ve also found communication, teamwork and my attention to detail have massively improved over the last year. Whilst I didn't intend to gain these skills, through the experiences on this course, I have found they have gradually developed, a reason why I love the varied learning on this course!
My T-level placement is giving me invaluable experience in a real construction company and introducing me to a professional work environment. It allows me to apply what I learn in college to real-world situations, furthering my understanding and preparing me for a full-time role. While I enjoy my studies, this hands-on experience is equipping me with practical skills and insights into the construction industry. Combining this real-world experience with my coursework is giving me a well-rounded view of the field, helping me build a strong skill set and a better understanding for my future career.
How has the T-level changed your perception of the construction industry?
Before starting my T-level, I had little understanding of everything involved in a construction project. My initial knowledge was quite limited, and I wasn’t fully aware of the various stages and factors that contribute to a successful build. However, after a year of study and experience in a working environment, my perception of the industry has expanded significantly. I now have a much clearer and more detailed understanding of the processes involved in construction projects. This deeper insight has not only enhanced my appreciation for construction but also reinforced my passion for it. I am genuinely excited to continue my journey and further explore as I progress into my second year.
Looking forward into your second year, if you could change one thing about your T-level, what would it be and why?
Currently, I wouldn’t change anything about my college experience. However, I do believe that increased on-site exposure during my placement would be beneficial. While I’ve gained valuable insights from the office side of projects, experiencing a live construction site would further my understanding to the next level. Observing how the planning and design work translates into actual construction and seeing how everything comes together and is managed in practice would provide a more comprehensive view of the industry. This is something I’ve discussed with R1 and I’m looking forward to more of this as I enter my second year!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
While I haven’t yet finalised my career path, in five years, I aspire to be either in full-time employment or undertaking a degree apprenticeship with a construction company. By the end of this course, I hope to have a clearer direction for my career. I’ve heard good things about degree apprenticeships, and I think it could be a great route to continue my learning from this T-level. Like this course, the prospect of applying my learning at university directly to practical work sounds great to me. Additionally, I aim to be driving and potentially moving into my own place.
What advice would you give to someone considering a T-level?
My advice to anyone considering a T-level would be to go for it! The experience has been incredibly rewarding for me so far. I’ve had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the industry, develop valuable skills, and gain hands-on experience. While some aspects can be challenging, with perseverance, it will be well worth it in the end.
T levels or Technical Levels are groundbreaking new qualifications which are equivalent to 3 A Levels. T Levels offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours.
